Electro-doom specialists The Bastard Noise hearken back to their ties to Man is the Bastard this week in a progressive noise-sludge split with The Endless Blockade.
Freeway & Jake One offer a funky, malleable hip-hop disc that leans on Freeway’s fiery delivery; The Souljazz Orchestra twirl through funk, Latin, African, down-tempo jazz, and big-band bits.
Meanwhile, Chicago trio Mako Sica reflects a Native American influence via a brooding combination of jangly guitars, reverberated vociferation, and instrumental dynamics, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops blur new and old while beholden to the traditions of Americana and early African-American folk. Though best known as Brother Ali’s DJ, BK-One further establishes a name for himself on Rádio do Canibal with the help of beat-making buddy Benzilla and an all-star cast of guest MCs. A playful commingling of samba and bossa nova with a funky foundation help make one of the most unique hip-hop albums of the year.
Additionally, synthetic/organic electronica duo Air issues its most realized album to date, A Place to Bury Strangers releases a hard-hitting post-punk/new-wave sophomore effort, and a half-dozen other noteworthy artists make our list of honorable mentions. (more…)

Following the critical acclaim of Alopecia, idiosyncratic pop-hop trio Why? pushes further toward the pop/rock end of the musical spectrum with an arrow that still points upward.
As Brother Ali brings another disc of smooth rhymes and banging beats, live instruments help dot his musical horizon and expand his sound. Meanwhile, the Diablo Swing Orchestra has an unorthodox style of its own, combining boogie-woogie with metal guitar, slap bass, classical cello, ragtime piano, theatrical baritone leads, and operatic falsettos.
