Monday, September 8th, 2008
Now that trepidations of Hurricane Gustav have pretty much fizzled away and New Orleans is safe and sound, the 10th annual Voodoo Experience music festival will be kicking off in full swing. With over 130 acts gracing the its 6 stages, the festival will be taking place October 24-26 in the Big Easy’s historic City Park. Indie-softcore outfit The Sea And Cake have announced the dates to their upcoming fall tour. Capitalizing off the success of last year’s Everybody, the tour will be in support of the band’s new album, Car Alarm, which is their eighth studio full-length. The album finds The Sea And Cake doing what they do best - crafting soft singalongs over languid guitars riffs, pulsing bass lines, and hypnotic drumbeats.
In this unique book/3-CD album, a collective of musicians and artists have come together to document the legacies of each U.S. president with original artwork and alt-country/folk songs. Each commander-in-chief has his own few pages with artistic portraits and original lyrics from the accompanying CDs which feature many musicians, such as Bill Callahan (Smog), Mark Kozelek (Sun Kill Moon, Red House Painters), and Alan Sparhawk (Low), among others.
The eighth annual Musicfest NW kicks off today in Portland, OR! Essex indie hip-hop duo dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip might be “just a band,” but that won’t stop us from getting excited about their debut album Angles, which comes out today via Sage Francis’ Strange Famous Records. The British duo have been turning heads for awhile in the UK with their whimsical rhymes and eclectic musical style (and not just because they’ve sampled Radiohead).
Over fifteen years ago, quiet indie band Bedhead began making gorgeously hushed music, with restrained instrumentation and hushed vocals that made them a staple in indie music circles. Sadly, though, the band called it quits in 1998, leaving its two band leaders - brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane - bored and longing for something to do with their time. They eventually formed a new creative outlet, The New Year, and released their first full-length three years after Bedhead’s last record.
On October 7th, German experimentalists The Notwist will release “Boneless” on 7″. The single - which includes the album version of “Boneless” from this year’s The Devil, You + Me and an exclusive remix version by Animal Collective’s Panda Bear - will be release in physical format only from Domino Records.
Well, summer is almost over, and while that means shorter days, longer nights, and cooler temperatures, there is still one last hurrah before the last glow of summer officially fades. We’re talking, of course, about Bumbershoot, Seattle’s music and arts festival.
Singer/songwriter Jolie Holland has just announced an upcoming North American tour. Starting in California and ending in New York, Holland will be on the road from mid-October to mid-November, playing a thorough set of shows in the US and Canada.
