36 Hours in Nashville
Thursday, December 17th, 2009Friday
1) Check in to the Hutton Hotel
The Hutton Hotel hallways smells like toilet. It’s unmistakable. But still, this is the place to stay, Nashville’s newest green hotel. It has a boutique feel, with overly friendly staff, French soaps, super comfy beds, free wi-fi, a rain shower, and warm cookies and milk waiting for you in the room. It’s the kind of place where they treat you like a real dandy, but in a good way. The restaurant is great — friendly, affordable. The bar closes at 2 a.m., but if you need more time to close your deal, $40 will keep it open until 4. (more…)
24 Hours in Zurich
Monday, December 14th, 2009
Arguably the most beautiful city in Europe, Zurich is friendly, comfortable, and absolutely delicious. Ranked as the city with the highest quality of living in the world, with the highest density of bathing facilities (that often turn into bars at night) and one restaurant for every 180 inhabitants, it’s a great (but likely expensive) stop on a European trip. Painting Today
Monday, November 16th, 2009Painting Today
Tony Godfrey, Phaidon Press, $75, 448 pages, Hardcover
Every painting student within the last forty years has been told painting is dead. But we continue to surround ourselves with paintings, to visit museums and galleries, and to read books filled with images of paintings. And the market still values paintings–Yue Minjun’s Execution, painted in 1985 and originally sold for $5,000 is now worth almost $6 million.
Author Tony Godfrey picks up on Art Today’s tradition, of using the prestige and magic of print, to effectively create a timeless capsule of paintings from the last forty years. His collection of paintings, arranged by theme, act as an introduction to the major movements in contemporary painting. (more…)
Gallows rock Chicago, fight opening band, generally be awesome
Monday, October 5th, 2009British hardcore band Gallows played Chicago’s Reggie’s Rock Club on Saturday October 3rd. The band, who were a bit late to begin their 8:15 All Ages-friendly set time, had a scuffle with local openers Explode and Make Up, and a few moments into their first song unanimously bolted off stage to muscle it out.
Following the long standing hardcore tradition of peace-making post-fight wrap up coverage, singer Frank Carter apologized for the incident and then performed the best rock concert I’ve seen in Chicago all year.
Say what you will about hardcore, but if you want to see a crazy show with tons of dancing, stage dives, whole-dance floor circle pits, but hate dance music and bright colored tights (I’m looking at you Girl Talk), its your best bet.
The set, littered with 16-year-old girls moshing, old guys making snide remarks from the back, ended with the song “Orchestra of Wolves.” The group encored with Black Flag’s “Nervous Breakdown” which was, again, interrupted by a fight to which Carter remarked, “Well, it looks like we’ve come full circle.”
Their most recent album Grey Britain is available now on Warner Bros.
Gallows come to Chicago this weekend
Friday, October 2nd, 2009Gallows will play Chicago this Saturday, don’t miss it. Last time I saw them I drove through a a snow storm to the Metro on Super Bowl Sunday. It was worth it. Their crass British charm make lyrics like, “I want you to wake up and remember my name / when you’re washing my cum off your fucking face” (Orchestra of Wolves, MP3 download below) somehow palatable.
