Ephel Duath Ponder Ocular Capacity of Canines

Ephel DuathDear Italian prog-metallers Ephel Duath,

There needs to be some sort of proper explanation here. You really chose Through My Dog’s Eyes as the title to your forthcoming album?

Okay, so the conceptual work, set for release in 2008, reportedly explores life and death via another mammal’s perspective. That’s fine. But Through My Dog’s Eyes?

Regardless, the group — now down to a trio of guitarist Davide Tiso, vocalist Luciano Lorusso, and new drummer Sergio Ponti — has built up enough slack to let the hackneyed selection slide (for now). After all, Ephel Duath’s fine fusion of jazz rhythms, meandering clean-channel guitar work, full-bodied bass tones, screeching saxophone, and fuzzy tech riffs made their last two albums, The Painter’s Palette and Pain Necessary to Know (Earache), more than redemptive of lackluster names.

Let’s hope that this new title doesn’t signify a turn for the worse. The J.R.R. Tolkien-obsessed outfit will release Through My Dog’s Eyes through international metal label Earache Records, which is also issuing Ephel Duath’s remix album, Pain Remixes the Known, overseas next Monday, July 23.
