Piglet: Lava Land

Who knew that Winnie’s little pink friend could bring the ruckus? Well, Piglet, the infamously adorable, rambunctious sidekick to the Pooh, does just that.

You’re probably no stranger to the mathy, melodic, spastic, indie instrumentals of Don Caballero, Ghosts and Vodka, and Volta do Mar; Piglet doesn’t stray too far from the formula. That being said, The Pink One, featuring two members of Seyarse, doesn’t waste much time messing around, either.

“Bugstomp,” the EP’s inaugural track, tears through three and a half minutes of beautiful, interwoven guitar/bass madness over furious drum breaks. And Lava Land spews forth so much finger tapping that you’ll swear there has to be a second guitarist. No dice!

The array of big, frenetic, meticulous beats is both ample and precise, dropping fills on top of your damn head from beginning to end. My lone complaint would be the lack of dissimilar material, a sin that is easily forgivable due to the constantly metamorphosing song structures.

Still, some future genre hopping would probably catapult The Pink One into “next level”-type status. I don’t mean to mislead you: Piglet does much more than ride the coattails of the aforementioned bands. Still, until further unique elements are brought into the equation, the comparisons are inevitable. If you’re all about this style, absolutely give Lava Land a listen.
