With one of the most exciting and historical presidential elections underway, a satirical account of previous and current leaders entitled Of Great & Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 Presidencies, will be released September 9th on Standard Recording. Musicians Christian Kiefer, Matthew Gerken, and Jefferson Pitcher composed and recorded the 3-disc set along with such guest musicians as Jamie Stuart of Xiu Xiu, Marla Hansen, Califone, and Bill Callahan. The songs take issue with the mythological idea that the president is someone more than human, such as in “When Ike Walked the Land,” a wryly sentimental tune about Dwight D. Eisenhower and the wholesome image of ’50s America. Not every president is skewered however, with John F. Kennedy being remembered as a martyr and Bill Clinton as an overly ambitious man ready to save the world. In November, they also plan on writing a song about the 44th president, to be released as a digital download.
