From its opening moments, the disc’s direction becomes obvious. Immediately present are a lower register and a dirty, gargling bass guitar; nearly absent are the dub moments for which the three-piece was named. The point is best proven on the first track, which, following a big rock beginning and spacey interlude, descends into a bludgeoning doom breakdown. Though clean-channel riffs and echoed snare hits haven’t gone extinct, practically every song presents a potent rock experience. On Dub Trio’s 2006 effort, New Heavy, vocally eclectic cult icon Mike Patton helped turn “Not Alone” into a song that could have fit countless radio rotations. Since that time, Patton has brought the band to Ipecac, the label he co-runs with Greg Werckman, and sang on a track for Another Sound is Dying. The fourteen-tune disc is slated for release in January. Dub Trio is currently touring the west coast with Helmet, progenitors of single-octave, dropped-D riffage, and soon begin a tour with Gypsy rockers Gogol Bordello through the beginning of November.
